Nike of Samothrace was discovered in 1863. It is estimated to have been created around 200-190 BC. It is 8 feet (2.44 metres) high. It was created to not only honor the goddess, Nike, but to honor a sea battle. It conveys a sense of action and triumph as well as portraying artful flowing drapery through its features which the Greeks considered ideal beauty. Her parents were the Titan Pallas and the Oceanic Styx, even though, she helped Zeus won the the battle between the Olympians and the Titans. For this reason, she became the sympol of victory in many areas of ancient Greece including military, athletics and other contests.
