The flute was a wind instrument of Greek antiquity. Depending on its construction, it was called monavlos (single flute), sideways (flute played sideways like the modern flute), diavlos (double flute). The flute was the basic instrument in all celebrations in Ancient Greece, especially in ceremonies in honor of Dionysus. In vase representations, it often appears that the flute was secured with a leather band that ran around the head and had an opening in the lip area. The flute also appears as an accompanying instrument in the movements of athletes in sporting events.
